In the 13th-14th centuries, the number of authors, scribes, book-makers, and book-painters increased significantly. As a result, centers of transcription, book production, and manuscript illumination were established in Iran and other Islamic regions. Earlier, during the 9th-10th centuries, several Arabic and Persian works and treatises had already been written on the procedures of writing, copying, correspondence, painting, illumination, script styles, and related practices.A study of Islamic manuscripts suggests that many works were produced in three main types of transcription centers: (A) court scriptoria, where manuscripts were elegantly copied for presentation to kings and caliphs; (B) scholarly and academic centers, where manuscripts were produced for educational and research purposes; and (C) scribes' and booksellers' workshops, where manuscripts were copied on demand for clients in exchange for payment. Each of these manuscripts shares certain common features that assist in their identification. This book also examines the specific customs and traditions of transcription that emerged within these manuscript production centers.
